Rites of Spring Procession to Save Our Gardens 5/01/2001 Earth Celebrations is an organization dedicated to preserving and saving the numerous green spaces and home-made gardens on the Lower East Side. These often intricately manicured spots once existed as abandoned vacant lots until the locals in the neighborhood took it upon themselves to transform them. Over the years, many gardens have been saved from the hands of developers thanks to this yearly procession of costumed revelers rallying to "Save Our Gardens". I stumbled onto information about the event and volunteered to perform. The days events included formal opening and closing ceremonies and performances at various gardens on the procession route. I performed "Gypsy" and sang harmonies for Elizabeth Avery who performed one of her songs at the closing ceremony and another at a neighboring garden along the way. It was a fun day and the weather was perfect. My parents were in town and they snapped these pictures. Enjoy! * * * Performing "Gypsy" in the garden
"ay-ya-ay-ya-ay, ay-ya-ay-ya-oh" -The Butterfly song at closing ceremony.
